Triglav

01 Apr

Triglav is the highest mountain in Slovenia. It has three peaks and is ever-present in Slovenian life.https://i0.wp.com/www1.fov.uni-mb.si/asd/images/Triglav.jpg

Triglav is also the name of a deity. He is represented by the mountain, He is the mountain. He has three heads (tri=three, glava= head) symbolizing Nav , Jav, and Prav. Heaven, Earth, and Underworld. Atmosphere, earth, and water. Eternity and the universe, including the material world we know.

He is the eternal father, the master of life and death. He personifies the invisible world, a veil covers his eyes and mouth. He is said to have horns, representing his animistic nature. I have also come across a couple sources here and there which indicate that he may have at one point been depicted as having goat’s or horse’s legs.

He is associated with dragons, large snakes and wolves. Some say they have felt the presence dragons near his mountain, and some say he is the passive and ever-present draconic force himself lurking beneath the mountain. He is also associated with black horses, which were once used in divination.

In Slavic lore, water is associated with the underworld (Nav), as are caves, canyons, trenches, mines, etc… anything that creates a channel between our material world (Jav) and Nav.
